Feeding Hungry Children Locally

“We had one second grader tell the teacher that she was so grateful for the food we sent home with her because it was the only food she and her brother had to eat that weekend,” said Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Outreach Committee member Kathy Ivanca. “We deliver 24 backpacks of food for 24 families. We are packing enough food in the 24 backpacks to feed 88 children.” Members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Preschool in Owatonna, Minn. are helping feed hungry children in their own community. Good Shepherd was one of five recipients last year; each MNS District Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod organization was awarded a $1,000 Lutheran Church Extension Fund grant last year. Ivanca shared their program feedback:

  • We deliver to two schools in Owatonna, K-5 and 6th grade.
  • We buy our food from Channel One Regional Food Bank in Rochester, Minn.
  • Good Shepherd’s total cost is running about $925.00 a month in groceries from Channel One.
  • We had one second grader tell the teacher she was so grateful for the food we sent home with her, because it was the only food her and her brother had to eat that weekend.
  • The School counselors have expressed that they are finding that the students who receive the backpacks have better moods in school, are less likely to act out in class, their test scores are up, and the kids are more attentive.

Applications are now accepted for five $1,000 MNS District LCEF Outreach Event Grants. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 5, 2013. Visit http://lcefuppermidwest.org/outreach-grants-mns/ to learn more and apply.
