Andrew Thompson is the 2014 Iowa District East Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) $1,000 Scholarship winner. A member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, IA, Thompson is a graduating senior from Benton Community High School and plans to enroll in the fall at Concordia University, Chicago and eventually become a Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod pastor.
“LCEF has personally touched my life by providing funding for my home church of St. John’s in Newhall, IA,” wrote Thompson in his scholarship application. “With that funding, we added a new addition that about doubled the size of our church building. This helped change not only the lives of the members of our church, but also those living in the community around our church. It also enabled our church to better spread the good news of Jesus to others in the community. … it warms my heart to hear and see how LCEF is assisting congregations in accomplishing their ministry related goals. … [LCEF’s] mission and vision are built around spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. 'God works for the good of those who love him,' Romans 8:28 and I firmly believe that God uses the Lutheran Church Extension Fund for His will.”
Thompson’s high school basketball coach and history teacher Howard Conrad wrote in his letter of recommendation, “Andrew Thompson is the most well grounded and well rounded student I have taught in my 35 years of teaching! His daily schedule starts with fine arts activities and ends with athletic activities. In between, Andrew excels in academics and is a friend to every peer he meets. Andrew handles adversity with maturity beyond his years. He maintains a positive attitude, analyzes the situation and works toward a positive outcome…. I admire the way Andrew treats his peers and staff. He takes time to listen to every person he meets…. Andrew is proud of his religious background and solid morals drive his actions…. National Honor Society President, Homecoming King, owner of a lead in the school musical, having solos in band and show choir, a multisport athlete, a friend to all, are accomplishments of Andrew Thompson.”
Andrew’s pastor, Rev. Steven Rempfer wrote the following in a letter of recommendation, “[Andrew] has participated in the youth ministry, as an usher, sung in the choir and provided special music during worship. He has gone on several events to inner city Chicago, helped in VBS and has been noted as one of our “St. John Servants,” an annual recognition here at St. John. Perhaps the best thing I can say about Andrew is that he has demonstrated a mature faith in Jesus Christ beyond his years.”
