Located two miles west of Lake Michigan in the South Wisconsin District, the members of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Belgium, Wisconsin needed more space for their ministry. Their community had grown over the last couple decades. In 1990, Belgium’s population was more than 900, by 2015, their population was an estimated 2,260.
Established in 1987, St. Mark was relatively young and a smaller congregation with 215 baptized members. Leadership had concern about limited resources for a building project. Their journey to expand the current facility began by kicking off a three-year ‘Share the Dream’ capital campaign. “We [wanted] to try to obtain at least 50% of the funds needed before we even started,” said Pastor Wayne King. “As it turned out, we had some issues to deal with in the [existing] building which needed to be fixed. This raised the cost of the project considerably. The good news was that we managed to take care of those [structural] issues before they became a problem.... As a result of all of this, our project expanded by another $75,000 dollars to do it right.”
Following St. Mark’s successful capital campaign, Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) was blessed to offer their support. With LCEF’s timely loan funding and the congregation’s ‘Share the Dream’ funds combined, St. Mark was able to complete the entire expanded building project, on time. During the school year, fall 2015 through spring 2016, many St. Mark members also volunteered their service almost every Saturday. By serving together and supporting each other, St. Mark’s building project was finished in time for their May 1, 2016 re-dedication celebration.
“The Lord has greatly blessed us with this project and we pray it will help us to further advance the Gospel here in Belgium, Wisconsin and in this world,” said King.
Helping to expand God’s Kingdom for Christ—it’s why Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) ministries support each other and why LCEF exists.
