Rachel Rethwisch is the 2016 Iowa District West (IDW) Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) $1,000 scholarship award winner. Rachel is a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Fort Dodge, Iowa, and a graduating senior at Fort Dodge Senior High School, Iowa. She hopes to major in biochemistry and then pursue a career in pharmacological studies.
LCEF is thankful for Rachel and the generations of her family who have supported Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) ministries by investing in LCEF over the years.
LCEF was blessed to support Rachel’s home congregation recently via Laborers For Christ. Rachel wrote, “[LFC] helped build our new expansion while keeping the costs down so that we could afford to add the necessary renovations.” According to Rachel, her grandfather, a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Wayne, Nebraska, served as a laborer for many years and helped build many different churches.
In his letter of recommendation for Rachel, FDSH Social Studies Instructor and National Honor Society Advisor Ryan Takatsuka wrote the following:
“Rachel's academic abilities are top notch…. Rachel is an award winning pianist and member of the performance, marching, jazz, and pep bands. In athletics, she was named as one of two captains to the varsity swim team, and the examples of her leadership do not stop there. She has been a long time participant in 4H club, the past two years acting as their president, is the treasurer in her church's youth group, and is a member of the National Council on Youth Leadership (NCYL).
Rachel's maturity carries over to her respectful nature and ability to listen to others without judgment, even if she disagrees with them. This, combined with her work ethic, is why I not only like Rachel, but respect her as a genuinely good person.”
Brad Niemeyer, former Director of Christian Education at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, had this to say about Rachel:
“I have been a witness to the qualities and high moral values of this young woman. I have known Rachel and her family for over ten years. She is very active in the youth group at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Rachel is always willing to help out with fundraisers, projects and continues to attend summer church camp at Camp Okoboji.
In the church setting, Rachel is respected by her peers and the younger children who see her on Sunday…. She has been involved in our youth service, Vacation Bible School, high school youth group and is consistently present on Sunday mornings in high school/college sessions…. Her intelligence, leadership abilities and perseverance truly makes her qualified [for this scholarship.]”
LCEF is blessed to have the funds available to support our youth as they pursue post-secondary education. It is our prayer that they are equipped to become strong, Christian leaders as adults.
